New research suggests that patients who discontinue new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a leading health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People purchasing these medications must be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a reversion to original weight within about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally have a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Doctors propose the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Accounts
People who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," recalled a patient.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
