A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's key public works projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” declared the country's president.
The president confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were built at an accelerated pace, defying forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised ongoing concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an immediate pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and running of these strategic initiatives.
